Learn the basics of 3D model design with free Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. We will cover several different CAD programs that suit different skill levels and use cases.
Course Structure
This course uses a pattern of instruction, guided practice, and independent practice to build foundational knowledge while reinforcing key working skills.
Course Content
We will have in-depth instruction and practice on two different 3D CAD programs that each have unique strengths.
We'll start with FreeCAD, a free open-source 3D modeling tool that offers a rich professional-grade toolset. FreeCAD is also multifaceted, with ""workbenches"" for many different tasks related to both 3D and 2D design.
Then we'll learn how to use SculptGL, a browser-based tool for creating models by sculpting. This program is easy to dive into and start having fun with. With a little practice, you'll be able to make intricate 3D sculptures.
After we've covered these main two, we'll also briefly introduce other software including openSCAD, blender, and SketchUp.
Finally, students will have an opportunity to choose a modeling challenge or try and model an idea of their own.
